Shingles is caused by the invasion of the human body’s tissues and nerve cells by the herpes zoster virus. When the body’s immune system weakens, small clusters of blisters will grow along the nerve line. Due to the formation of a band-like rash, it was previously called “snake skin” by some Taiwanese people. Traditional Chinese medicine doctor Sheng-Pu Lee said that many shingles patients will experience varying degrees of nerve pain. Some patients may even develop chronic nerve pain, which lasts a lifetime.
Compared to Western medicine’s anti-inflammatory treatment method, some patients may still experience nerve pain after being cured because the issue of adhesion between skin tissue and nerves was not taken into account. Additionally, the virus in the body may not be eliminated and may cause a relapse. Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee suggests that traditional Chinese medicine treatment can better take into account the body’s immune mechanism to achieve a more complete treatment effect. He uses medicated powder mixed with volatile rice wine, which can be applied and evaporated, allowing the toxins in the body to be discharged. This type of therapy is called “detoxification” in Chinese medicine. After treatment, the epidermal tissue can recover well, and the skin tissue will not adhere to the nerves, avoiding residual nerve pain.
Herpes is a virus that attacks nerve cells, causing blisters to appear along the nerve distribution. According to Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee, many people apply ointments hoping to suppress the virus with anti-inflammatory effects, but instead, the blisters cannot evaporate the fluid, causing sticking problems when they burst. Therefore, medication should not be used casually.
If traditional Chinese medicine is used to treat shingles from the beginning, Dr. Sheng-Pu Lee said that the nerve pain problem would be solved quickly, usually within about a week, and there would be no residual sequelae in the future. Even if shingles recur and traditional Chinese medicine is sought for treatment, it still has the effect of relieving nerve pain, but the treatment time is longer, and the focus of the disease must be completely eradicated to solve the problem.
Not only shingles can cause nerve pain, but also common chronic skin diseases such as eczema, urticaria, and allergies, which are also related to the immune system. If the epidermis eventually becomes keratinized, the skin tissue and nerves can easily become sticky, causing similar nerve pain. However, shingles is still the most common cause.
